What to See in Vienna - Attractions and Travel Tips

Vienna is a stunningly beautiful city, full of elegant palaces, cozy cafes, and so many museums that even the biggest culture lover might get tired visiting them. If you are planning your trip for the first time, it’s worth preparing a little.

In this Vienna guide you will find essential tips on how to get around the city, what to see in Vienna, and how to save money while traveling. Planning will be even easier with our interactive Vienna map, where the best attractions are already marked.

How to Get from Vienna Airport to the City Center

  • CAT (City Airport Train) - express train to Wien Mitte station in just 16 minutes. Ticket: €14.90 one-way, €24.90 return.
  • S7 suburban train - takes about 25 minutes but costs only €4.50. Stops at more stations, so it can be more convenient.
  • Taxi - fixed price €42 (up to 4 people). Good when traveling with luggage or in a group, but not always faster due to traffic.

Public Transport and Apps

Getting around Vienna is very easy - Google Maps is enough. It shows public transport routes, stops, and helps you navigate easily. There’s also the “WienMobil” app, but for most travelers Google Maps is sufficient.

The advantage - in our interactive Vienna map, attractions appear directly in Google Maps, so when planning your route, you’ll also see transport and nearby places.

Transport Tickets and City Cards

If you plan to stay in Vienna for several days, it’s worth buying a transport pass - it’s simpler and cheaper.

  • Wiener Linien passes - 24, 48, 72 hours, or 7-day tickets.
  • Vienna Welcome Card - transport + discounts for attractions.
  • Vienna City Card - the official city card, includes transport + over 200 discounts.

If you use public transport more than 3 times a day - a pass pays off.

Luggage Storage in Vienna

If you need to leave your luggage, the train station is very convenient - lockers cost only €2.50 for 24 hours. Perfect if you arrive in the morning or leave late in the evening.

Vienna Attractions - What to Visit

Vienna is full of attractions: palaces, museums, parks, and galleries. For a complete experience, choose at least one from each category.

  • Albertina Museum - art gallery combined with palace interiors.
  • Schönbrunn Palace - an iconic spot with beautiful gardens.
  • Belvedere Palace - famous for Klimt’s “The Kiss”.
  • Old Town and St. Stephen’s Cathedral - a perfect walking route.

Free Things to Do in Vienna

  • City architecture, palace courtyards, elegant streets;
  • Wien Museum Karlsplatz;
  • MUSA (contemporary art space);
  • Peterskirche Church;
  • Minoritenkirche Church;
  • Town Hall (Rathaus) - free tours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays;
  • City parks and green spaces;
  • Some museums are free on the first Sunday of the month (e.g., Museum of Military History).

Practical Tips for Travelers

  • Bike lanes - be careful, as they often run next to sidewalks.
  • On Sundays, many places are closed - shops and malls are shut.
  • Prepare your route in advance - Vienna has a lot of attractions to see.

To save time and see more, plan ahead. Use public transport, get a city card, and don’t forget the free activities.

You can find all Vienna attractions in the interactive Vienna map - a handy guide on your phone or computer.
