What to See in Crete? Travel Guide with Tips
At the beginning of August, I decided I needed a break - the Lithuanian summer was once again more cloudy than sunny, so I bought last-minute tickets to Crete. I didn’t just want to lie on the beach, but also to see more than just tourist towns, so I immediately decided to rent a car and discover more unique places.
If you are planning a trip, my experience can serve as a mini Crete guide to help you discover the beauty of the island.
Preveli Beach - palms and a river
The first place that completely enchanted me - Preveli Beach with its palm valley. The road to it is winding, but the view makes up for everything: the river flows into the sea, and wild palms decorate the shores. It is one of the most beautiful attractions in Crete, worth including in your itinerary.
Arkadi Monastery - a reflection of history
I am not a huge fan of history, but the atmosphere of the Arkadi Monastery left a deep impression. The 16th-century building, mountain panorama, and special tranquility make you feel as if time has stopped. This is one of the most important places that should definitely be marked on the Crete map.
Triopetra Beach - tranquility by three rocks
Triopetra (meaning "three rocks") - another spot worth visiting in Crete. There were hardly any people here, just the sea, sun, and silence. A perfect place to escape the tourist crowds and see a calmer side of Crete.
My 5 Tips for Traveling in Crete
-
Rent a car - without it, you’ll only see half of the island’s beauty. Car rental in Crete is essential if you want to reach remote places.
-
Gas stations close early, especially in remote areas - fill up your tank in advance.
-
Eat where the locals eat - the best food in Crete is hidden in small tavernas where Greeks gather.
-
After dinner, you’re often treated to raki - accept it, as it’s part of local tradition and Cretan hospitality.
-
Bring a light jacket - even if it’s hot, the weather in the mountains can change in an instant.
If you are planning a holiday and wondering what to see in Crete, these places and tips will definitely come in handy. My trip was like a short Crete travel guide, showing that beyond the beautiful beaches there is much more: history, nature, and authentic local culture.
You can conveniently find all attractions, beaches, and towns in the interactive Crete map.
